Rhythm of the City

Design created to coincide with Aloft’s boutique music hotel branding and aesthetic

Faux Mural Advertisement (1st Layer)

This portion of the mural represents a fictitious, weathered sign painting inspired by the actual radio station, WVKO-FM 94.7, which held prominence in the Columbus radio music scene from 1963-1997. WVKO was an R&B/Soul music station with the tagline “The Rhythm of The City.” This design includes a starry Columbus skyline, along with a radio tower producing wave signals that factor into subsequent mural motifs. Font alterations, layout, and design were researched to simulate the style of mural advertisements that gained traction in the middle of the 20th century.

Superimposed Imagery (2nd Layer)

This portion of the mural includes superimposed, colorful imagery to that is distinguishable from the underlying advertisement. The primary motif, inspired by radio frequencies, visually explores different representations of the transmission of sound. This layer provides a bright, curvilinear aesthetic that responds to the faded, geometric advertisement below, while also conveying a clear separation between the two.
