Intersections

Sullivant Avenue intersects a number of neighborhoods that each have a deep history, a rich communal tapestry, and a strong creative spirit. My goal with this mural project was to create a work of art that illuminates the complex beauty of these neighborhoods.

The title of the mural has several meanings:

Physically, Intersections references the current infrastructure improvements on Sullivant Ave, including roadway repairs, pedestrian safety enhancements, new traffic signals, and street lighting.

Conceptually, the title refers to the multi-faceted intersections between people, infrastructure, environment, and industry that create the unique communities of Sullivant Ave.

Stylistically, this design expresses intersectionality by mixing geometric shapes with organic life. The geometric patterns represent architecture and infrastructure, and the organic life is illustrated as native plants, butterflies, and local birds and animals. A sequence of intersections define the overall composition: lines cross the subjects of the mural and each other, creating a series of overlapping junctions and thresh holds where the style changes as an intersection with a diagonal line takes place.

This mural highlights the importance of intersections to our communities. Physically, they provide access. Humanistically, they create the culture of our society. Environmentally, they define our relationship with nature. Cross sections flow seamless throughout the mural, presenting a harmonious vision of the intersections of Sullivant Avenue.
